Craft Book Month Blog Hop {Little Stitches}

September marks the 4th Annual Craft Book Month at Craft Buds! This year, we're excited to celebrate all month long with a blog hop of inspiring craft book projects and LOTS of giveaways for sewing along with a sewing, knitting, cookbook or other craft book of YOUR CHOICE.

If you are a craft book hoarder, you are not alone! I collect more and more books each year. 

It's time to dust off your craft books, unfold those crisp pattern sheets and put those patterns to good use by actually making some projects. :)

My PrOJeCT

I am so excited to be invited back to this fun blog hop! I love seeing every one's projects and being introduced to new books. This is my 3rd year participating. The last 2 years, I have stuck to what I'm good at - making quilts (You can see my past projects for Craft Book Month here and here). This year, I stepped away from the machine and took to needlework.

I have been admiring the many new (and super adorable) embroidery patterns that have popped up over the last few years. When I was a child learning to sew, I had a cross-stitched teddy bear pillow to work on. Although I don't think I ever finished it. Hmm...

I dabble here and there with needlework, but don't know many stitches. Little Stitches by Aneela Hoey is a fantastic book for any beginner. There is so much information about what type of needle to use, how to prepare your fabric and hoop, and starting/finishing stitches. She also describes each type of stitch, what it's used for and has step-by-step instructions with illustrations on how to create each stitch.

Little Stitches includes 12 projects from start to finish, including sewing zippers, quilting and binding. There are also over 100 ready to use drawings to help you get started with your design. The drawings come on regular pages as well as transfer pages, so you can easily iron on to your fabric. 

I had a hard time narrowing down which drawing to use. I was first drawn to the Cherry On The Tree Swing. I also liked Little Red Riding Hood, the clothesline, the bunting, the tree house and the girl with the umbrella. 

But before I could really decide on a drawing, I first had to decide what I would be using it on. I dug through some of my craft drawers and found a basket liner cloth. Now that I knew what I would be working on, I still couldn't decide on a design. Ultimately, I took the tree from Cherry On The Tree Swing, the bunting and the fruit basket to create my own little scene. 

Because each drawing was a different scale, I had to do a little resizing on the copier. 

I traced the drawings onto my cloth as best I could. It was a bit difficult to trace due to the weave, so it was a pretty rough trace. I wasn't able to trace the leaves at all. The bunting rope and grass was also hard to see and were drawn in later, along with the side post for the bunting. 

I placed the leaves at random. I used different shades of green, yellow and orange, and add a few falling leaves to complete the look.

I LOVE the way it turned out! I think I might make a few more of these :)

Mosaic Tiles Quilt-A-Long

Happy December! 'Tis the season for handmade holidays . . . and being incredibly busy! That's why I'm excited to announce a super-fun and simple quilt along that you can easily take part in, no matter how much more shopping, wrapping and baking you have to do!

Mosaic Tiles Quilt Along

Next Monday, 12/9 through 2/14 (that's Valentine's Day for all you romantics!), Craft Buds is hosting the Mosaic Tiles Quilt Along! This beginner-friendly quilt pattern was designed by Sukie for the book, Modern Bee—13 Quilts to Make with Friends, by my friend, Lindsay Conner.

Although it's a Quilt-A-Long, participants are not limited to making quilts. We'd love to see what you can create based on the original Mosaic Tiles block design. Is it a holiday stocking or tree skirt? How about an eBook cover or messenger bag? Whip up a mini quilt for your Valentine, an apron for your sister or your own quilt design inspired by the block. Anything goes, as long as you create a finished item! During the 10-week quilt a long, we'll be sharing project inspiration, quilting tips and layout options with lots of help from our friends. If you don't have time to get started in December, we invite you to go ahead and sign up anyway! You can join us in 2014 with plenty of time to finish a project before mid-February. Craft Book Month - Blog Hop

Good Morning! and welcome to the 3rd annual Craft Book Month blog hop. This is my second year on the blog hop, and I am excited to be back! When Lindsay asked if I would like to participate again, I knew exactly what book I wanted to showcase: Growing Up Modern by Allison Harris of Cluck Cluck Sew. I have been a long time admirer of Allison's. So many of her patterns make my never ending to-do list. Earlier this year I used her Scout pattern to make a quilt for my Grandpa. You can read about that here.

Growing Up Modern. This is such a wonderful book for anyone sewing for a child. The introduction offers great direction in making the quilt top, finishing the quilt and even some tips on how to use up your scraps!

Though this book is geared toward children's quilts, most quilts include sizes crib-twin, and could easily be adapted for a larger size, if needed. While looking through this book, I had a hard time deciding which quilt to make for the blog hop. In the end, I went with the first quilt that caught my eye. Tumble.

 

Once I decided which quilt I would be making, I had the perfect bundle in mind. And lucky for me, it was just the right amount of fat quarters. I wanted to make this a quilt that any child could use, and combining my love of gingham, went with the 1/8" rainbow gingham fat quarter bundle from Riley Blake Designs.

I made the crib size, measuring 49"x50". This quilt went together so quickly! I had all pieces cut in just a couple of hours, and with strip-sewing, had the top sewn in about as much time.

I started quilting on it the next day. But .. had a few thread problems, that resulted in having to check my machine in for repairs. Not knowing when my machine would actually be fixed, I wondered if I would get the quilting done before my day on the blog hop. Luckily I got my machine back on Friday and was able to finish up the quilt by Monday night. Whew! That was a close call :)

I went with a simple geometric design connecting the corners of the inner and outer squares, then rounding out the middle from corner to corner. A little bit of dense quilting in the sashing and this quilt is complete!

I am loving the way it turned out.

Craft Book Month - Blog Hop

I am so excited to be apart of this blog hop, my first blog hop! Lindsay and I officially met at the Spring Quilt Market. She is such an amazing lady. All the work she does behind the scenes is absolutely incredible. So when she asked if I would showcase a project I have made from a book, I jumped at the chance!!

If you know me, I do not do a lot of projects from others when it comes to quilting. I mostly do my own thing and create a quilt specifically for the person who will be receiving it. I am a self-taught hand-quilter of 12 years now. In recent months I have started learning to machine quilt.

Being a shop owner, I not only try to keep up with what's new in the quilting world, but also what's new with designers. There are so many fantastic quilts out there. So many of them I do want to make. So very little time to fit them all in. At least not all at once.

I think it's safe to say that we love pre cuts! I bought my first pre cut 2 years ago. It was a charm pack. At first I didn't really get the appeal of pre cuts. Now I do. They certainly save on time and cutting for a quick project. While my collection of pre cuts has slowly been growing, I still have only used charm packs. Up until I saw this quilt:    Picnic by Kimberly Brackett from her book Scrap-Basket Sensations

This was my first quilt, cut and sewn, for the 2012 year. I think it took me 3 days. And, yes, I still need to get it quilted. I have an ever growing stack of quilts just waiting to be quilted, and I know I'm not the only one ;)

This was a quilt I needed to make. I needed to make a quilt for my little girl, and this was it. One of the hardest parts for me is finding the right fabric for the right pattern. With this quilt, I already knew what I wanted to do. So, I used my first Rolie Polie; or my first 3 Rolie Polies. It was Promenade by Cyndi Walker for Riley Blake Designs. (For those not familiar with Rolie Polies, they are made up of one piece of each fabric in a line, so they tend to be 1/3-1/2 half less than that of a Jelly Roll.) 2 would have been perfect if I had stuck to the pattern dimensions, but I like to make BIG quilts. This pattern is for a lap, and I wanted it for a twin. So, I added a block to each row and a full row at the bottom.

I wanted all the colors to blend nicely with each other; instead of keeping one color for one block, I laid them out in a 3-1 ratio. I am quite pleased with the end result, and more importantly, my little girl LOVES it!
