Growing Up Modern. This is such a wonderful book for anyone sewing for a child. The introduction offers great direction in making the quilt top, finishing the quilt and even some tips on how to use up your scraps!
Though this book is geared toward children's quilts, most quilts include sizes crib-twin, and could easily be adapted for a larger size, if needed. While looking through this book, I had a hard time deciding which quilt to make for the blog hop. In the end, I went with the first quilt that caught my eye. Tumble.
Once I decided which quilt I would be making, I had the perfect bundle in mind. And lucky for me, it was just the right amount of fat quarters. I wanted to make this a quilt that any child could use, and combining my love of gingham, went with the 1/8" rainbow gingham fat quarter bundle from Riley Blake Designs.
I made the crib size, measuring 49"x50". This quilt went together so quickly! I had all pieces cut in just a couple of hours, and with strip-sewing, had the top sewn in about as much time.
I started quilting on it the next day. But .. had a few thread problems, that resulted in having to check my machine in for repairs. Not knowing when my machine would actually be fixed, I wondered if I would get the quilting done before my day on the blog hop. Luckily I got my machine back on Friday and was able to finish up the quilt by Monday night. Whew! That was a close call :)
I went with a simple geometric design connecting the corners of the inner and outer squares, then rounding out the middle from corner to corner. A little bit of dense quilting in the sashing and this quilt is complete!
I am loving the way it turned out.
